WWE – SummerSlam 2009 (8.23.09)

Posted: August 14, 2012 in 2009, WWF/E

1. Intercontinental Championsip
Rey Mysterio (c) vs. Dolph Ziggler

Very solid opener. Ziggler’s asset value is slowly increasing within time.
Grade: B-

2. MVP vs. Jack Swagger

Two talented performers that were given a short amount of time. Decent match though.
Grade: C

3. Unified Tag Team Championship
Chris Jericho & Big Show (c) vs. Cryme Tyme

Ever since WrestleMania 25, both the WWE Tag Team titles & the World Tag Team titles were unified in a match. Now the belts can be defended simultaneously on both brands. Chris Jericho had won the titles with Edge during the summer, however Edge was injured so Jericho chose the Big Show as his new partner and they took off. Cryme Tyme have been around for 3 years but never won any tag title so now it’s the time to shine. Nothing special here with Jeri-Show dominating throughout the match.
Grade: C

4. Kane vs. Great Khali w/Ranjin Singh

Not this again
Grade: F

5. D-Generation X vs. Legacy

Trips has been feuding all year with the Legacy, led by WWE Champion Randy Orton.  This time he had enough and brought his missing friend, Shawn Michaels to war. This was really good with Dibiase & Rhodes being one step ahead every move the veterans made. It’s a good thing seeing them more independent than they’re lackey roles while in Orton’s presence.
Grade: B

6. ECW Championship
Christian (c) vs. William Regal w/Ezekial Jackson & Vladimir Kozlov

10 seconds…..
Grade: DUD

7. WWE Championship
Randy Orton (c) vs. John Cena

These two have had a decent amount of good matches but this time it wasn’t the case. Three restarts and the shenanigans that took place were really overbooked.
Grade: D+

8. World Heavyweight Championship
Tables, Ladders & Chairs Match
Jeff Hardy (c) vs. CM Punk

CM Punk has been embracing the dark side and boy is he good at it. Ever since he cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase in the summer, he has been on the tail of one Jeff Hardy for his demons with drugs. The Straight-Edge Superstar is now using his lifestyle as a weapon and ridicules the Charismatic Enigma with some shoot promos. Both men are similar in physical descriptions but are totally opposites in character. They went at it for over 20 minutes non stop. Real stiff shots and some cool spots. I applause both men for closing the event in a spectacular performance.
Grade: B+

Special Feature:

SummerSlam 15 Diva Battle Royal – Highlights of the battle royal and not the actual match itself.

In conclusion, it’s a pretty solid event that has it’s moments. By this time, you can see the transition of main event stars. Guys like John Cena, Randy Orton, CM Punk & Jeff Hardy are now the cream of the crop while veterans like Triple H, Shawn Michaels, Chris Jericho, Big Show & Rey Mysterio are now play recurring roles in the main event scene.

Verdict: 7.25/10
